Famous Gems The LaPeregrina Pearl

laperegrina-pearlThe word La Peregrina is Spanish and translates to, The Wanderer. The gem was found by an African slave on the Santa Margarita  coast in the Gulf of Panama in the mid-16th century. The pearl is the size of a quail egg. It is truly amazing that it still exits considering the hands that owned it through its history. From many royals to Richard Burton who purchased it in 1969 at a Sotheby’s auction for $37,000. He gave it to Elizabeth Taylor his wife for Valentine’s Day celebrating their first marriage. In December 2011 at a Christie’s auction it was sold for a record $11.8 million. more
