A very interesting historical foundation exists for this type of jewelry. Its original form is a belt hook worn by the lady of the castle. Wide belts were in fashion. Since clothing was designed without pockets, women began to hang large chatelaine hooks on their belt to hang varied household tools. This chatelaine method of carrying things needed around the castle eventually, it is claimed, gave way to the modern day lady’s handbag. Around the 1900s women started to work away from their homes ad chatelaines lost their popularity.
