Women Face Tougher Financial Retirement Challenges

The statistics are sobering for women entering retirement. The poverty rate for women age 65 and older is 16 percent, compared with 9 percent for men of the same age group, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. About 37 percent of American women 65 and older live alone, compared with 19 percent of men the same age. And 47 percent of women 75 and older live alone, based on reports from the Council on Contemporary Families.
